About the Author Per Olaf Fjeld is a professor at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. Since 1975, he has run a small architectural studio with his wife, Emily Randall Fjeld. I knocked, he opened the door, and I started my first job as an architect. Thirty-five years later, Fehn has finally placed this thin strip of brass into his drawer. During those thirty-five years, I listened to his stories, worked with him, and visited his buildings. In this book, it is my aim to bring to life his voice as an architect, educator, and storyteller with the capacity to transform a personal narrative and its essence into physical space. In my first book, Sverre Fehn: The Thought of Construction, published in 1983, Fehn was at a midpoint in his career. He had little work in that period and was able to set aside time for a publication. The background material for that book consisted of several notebooks recording conversations and interviews that took place from 1978 to 1980. Not everything in those notebooks was used or relevant at the time, since the purpose of that volume was to introduce Fehn’s work to a broader international audience. Beginning with my early association with Fehn’s office and continuing as I taught with him at the Oslo School of Architecture until he retired in 1994, I took notes on all his lectures I attended and, whenever possible, our conversations. On and off we talked about putting together a second book, but neither one of us had the time or focus such a project required. Yet one day as I looked through some of my old notebooks, it became clear that without an effort to transcribe, organize, and make the connections between my notations and Fehn’s work, this information would be lost. When I finally set to work, I discovered I had boxes of notebooks not only on Fehn’s lectures but also on his friends and colleagues, which gave further depth and immediacy to the material. But the most rewarding discovery has been to find that my notes correspond to and compliment his sketches, which have always been an essential tool in his creative process. From: Chapter 1, Midsummer FramesVery few Scandinavian architects educated just after World War II have been able to capture the Nordic tradition and transform it into a vibrant modern architectural language in the manner of the Norwegian architect Sverre Fehn. His work has an intuitive confidence in how to use the Nordic landscape and its particular light conditions within the built culture, and yet throughout his career each period has reflected a refined sensitivity to international changes and attitudes in architecture. It can be compared to a poetic work conceived on an isolated mountain by a writer with an uncanny, intuitive sense of what is going on in the towns below. The result is a fresh identity for each project and, behind that, a conceptual framework that is equally surprising and demanding. For many years, situating Fehn’s talent and impact within modern Scandinavian architecture was not clear. He was born in a remote and, at the time, poor country, but this isolation was also an advantage in that he met the world outside with energy and curiosity and without expectations. Today, he has gained a place alongside other important figures in architecture and has influenced a new generation of Scandinavian architects through his years as a teacher. Yet this recognition has been slow to take hold at home in Norway. Sverre Fehn’s work has the same meticulous workmanship, clarity of construction, and use of material found in the best of prewar Scandinavian architecture and design. It is a heritage he has always respected but at the same time has reworked and added new layers. Fehn’s creative process is rather complex. He edges around a given topic or project, nearing it by way of a myriad of poetic stories, phrases, and sketches, and through this process strips the constructive thought down to its most basic state. Conceptually, he places material in two distinct categories: material as mass, most often represented by concrete, and material that through its intrinsic nature carries a precise or clear set of dimensions, most often represented by wood. Parallel to this deliberation on material, Fehn considers a range of inventive stories and images. At the point he is able to bring a particular story into his material concept, a creative resistance force belonging to structure evolves. A conscious use of sequential movement is also part of this plot. And similar to the best in Scandinavian architecture, the architect deems catching light and bringing it into an interior spatial presence more important than focusing on the view out.

Each State therefore weaves its own web of tax treaties to protect taxpayers against double taxation and thus preventing the discouragement which double taxation may provide in the free flow of international trade and investment. Tax treaties play a vital role in a global economy, attempting to reconcile the complex and ever-changing internal tax laws of different countries. Most tax treaties worldwide are based on the OECD's Model Convention with respect to taxes on income and on capital ("OECD Model Convention") and follow both its structure and wording. The main purpose of the OECD Model is the settling of the most common problems that arise in the field of international double taxation. Its starting point is the dilemma which arises where the same income or capital is subject to tax in the taxpayer's residence state and the state from which the income derives. Notably, the basis for the allocation of taxing rights varies for different categories of income and capital. The fundamental principle that pervades the OECD Model Convention is, however, that the allocation of taxing rights stems from the substantive economic nexus of income and capital. Thereby, tax treaties restrict certain income tax provisions under domestic tax law in order to avoid - or at least mitigate - double taxation. The mechanisms for the avoidance of double taxation provided by the OECD Model Convention are complex, and the methods for the distribution and allocation of taxing rights between Contracting States particularly tortuous. A clear and complete understanding of the mechanics of the OECD Model is essential to each tax analysis involving cross-border transactions, all the more amid the increasing strategic importance of tax treaties in international trade and investment. Oliver R. Hoor is a Senior Manager within an international tax advisory firm in Luxembourg. He is a Luxembourg Certified Accountant (Expert Comptable) and Certified German Tax Advisor (Steuerberater). He holds a degree in business administration with a major in tax from the University of Applied Sciences of Trier (Germany). His professional experience includes cross-border tax planning (holding and financing activities, Islamic finance, Transfer Pricing, Real Estate, Private Equity, Intellectual Property) and Mergers & Acquisitions. Oliver has written numerous articles on Luxembourg and international taxation, Islamic finance and transfer pricing, all published in renowned international and Luxembourg tax journals. Moreover, he has written a book entitled "The OECD Model Tax Convention - A comprehensive technical analysis" which has also been published in French ("Le Modele OCDE de Convention fiscale - Analyse technique detaillee"). Oliver is a guest lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences of Trier in Germany providing courses and seminars on Luxembourg and international taxation. He is also a member of the Luxembourg Branch of the International Fiscal Association (IFA).

I really wanted this book to be terrible. I thought it was going to be completely biased towards Catholicism by displaying Protestantism in a negative light. What I found in this book instead was a very well-written, well-sourced (though I have some complains of the author's heavy quotations of Eusebius), and honest testimony for why Steve Ray became a Catholic.I currently find myself walking a similar path in my search for truth and have been glad to come across people like Steve Ray and Scott Hahn. Steve Ray is honest and passionate about what he writes and his writing style is both scholarly and easy to read.I wanted to be able to argue against many of the things he said and found myself agreeing with more things than not.I'm still learning and can't say I will become a Catholic today or tomorrow but this has helped me significantly on my journey.Thank you Steve and all honest Christians who have made an honest inquiry into their beliefs to arrive where they did and took the time to share their journey with us.

First I gotta say I really enjoy listening to Steve Ray every time he's on Catholic Answers Live on the local EWTN radio station. His energy and his knowledge and his patience and his question answering ability about the Catholic church is just amazing.I love this book for its content and Steve's tale of conversion. That being said I'm disappointed in what the book turned out to be. I was expecting to hear about his journey. Instead, according to my Kindle app, I find I'm done reading the book at only 43%. That's right 57% of this book is footnotes!I would say Steve's story itself is maybe 10 percent or less of the 43% of the book. The rest of the book (while fine) reads more like a college paper. He sets up three topics and then defends them with EXTENSIVE quotes from the bible, the catechism and the church fathers, not much of his own story or his way of defending the church. Which is fine, but I didn't think I was purchasing a simple reference book. I want to hear Steve talk not simply quote source material.I feel this book is meant to be purchased printed so that you can give it to a protestant to read or to have on hand for quick reference. But you'll need a lot more reference books because Steve only covers those three topics.

Most interesting book I have read on my Catholic faith and written by a converted Baptist/Evangelist! His factual support for all his assertions has greatly enlightened me and made me so much better educated to defend my faith! Kudos to Steven Ray for teaching me what the Baltimore Catechism did not!

Steve had a problem. He knew Jesus was for real but he was beginning to find that his presuppositions about the church were not. This is the story of how he fought against the Tiber tide until he could fight no longer and gave in to that which he had persecuted for so long. ("Crossing the Tiber" or "Swimming the Tiber" is popular Catholic convert slang referring to the Tiber river in Rome with regard to joining the Roman Catholic church.) Steve is one of many Protestants who had realized their one defining principle was that they were not Catholic. Their search for the roots of their faith led them to see the internal contradictions in the Protestant worldview and the discoveries were frightening and life-altering. Steve was goaded on to the deep Tiber waters by his loving wife and it is clear that the changes have been a spiritual empowerment in their family.With extensive footnotes that do not distract from the primary text, Steve relays their story as he first wrote it down for friends and family. It is a heartfelt and appealing story that makes us want to join in the journey with them. The journey ends with their somewhat hesitant realization that Jesus was alive and well in the Catholic church they had distrusted. It was a conversion not far from that of the Apostle Paul in realizing the one whom they persecuted was calling them to His family.The brief overview of the Ray family conversion is just the beginning. Steve adds to that story an historical, scriptural, and enlightening study of Baptism and then of the Eucharist. Each of the three sections could stand alone in scope and depth of study, especially in light of the extensive footnotes and references. It is a conversion story that packs a theological wallop without skipping a beat. Emotionally and intellectually challenging and inspiring at the same time. You will not easily dismiss this incredible treatise of faith.

Listened to author at our Church and ordered the book to learn more. It is very well written and easy to read.

Evangelicals reading the story of a fellow evangelical becoming catholic may be influenced to become catholic too because of his example.

Steve Ray provides a compelling narrative about his conversion from Protestantism to the Roman Catholic Church. Then he provides a sampling of the writings of early Church fathers (men after the Apostles) and references from the Bible and Catholic Church teachings on the two important topics of Baptism and the Holy Eucharist. As a Protestant, who has com to the conclusion that Protestantism is a distortion of the Church started by Jesus Christ, this book was a confirmation of my need to convert to Catholicism.

Excellent book! Kinda a tough read because of all the important footnotes and historical writings included, but EXCELLENT book. I bought another copy for my brother to read.
